Shepherd, Walker, and Cross were the last to leave the briefing room when the meeting was over. The soldiers had the next couple of hours to themselves, and Lancaster had been dismissed down to Supply to get her new equipment and speak to the tailor about her Shadow Squadron uniform. The standard Air Force uniform she’d worn in the field had been cut for a male body and didn’t fit her quite right. One of the benefits of being part of Shadow Squadron was having a distinct field uniform that was also specifically tailored to each individual.

Shepherd was lingering by the door. “Say, Commander, Chief?” he said to Walker and Cross. “Can I ask you something about Morgan?”

“Speak your mind, Sergeant,” Cross said.

“Did you know we knew each other?” Shepherd said. “Me and Morgan, I mean.”

“I didn’t know about you and her sister,” Cross answered. “I saw you went to the same high school at the same time, though. As small as your graduating class was, it seemed likely you’d met at least.”

“That doesn’t have anything to do with why you picked her, does it?” Shepherd asked. “Did you think that maybe since I knew her that’d make it easier for the other guys to accept her as a teammate?”

“The thought crossed my mind,” Cross admitted.

“Well, do me a favor, Commander,” Shepherd said. “Don’t tell her that.”

“Don’t worry, Sergeant,” Cross said. “This team doesn’t need a kid sister or a mascot. It needs a good soldier who can do the work. Lancaster’s proven to me that she’s legit, and I’m fully confident she can prove the same to you and the others on her own. Without your help.”

Shepherd nodded. “Good. I’m glad to hear you say that, Sir,” he said. “Lord knows I already have enough sisters of my own to worry about back home.”

Walker frowned. “I’m willing to bet your sisters worry about you even more,” he said.

Shepherd nodded. “Fair enough.”
